Appalachia Service
Project for 2010
The Appalachia Service Project, more
commonly referred to as ASP, is a Christian mission
that focuses on the housing needs of low-income
families in the Appalachian Mountains that began 41
years ago in 1969. Today, ASP sees a total of 15,000
volunteers each summer in its 24 centers spread
throughout Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, and
Virginia.
Every summer, a group of dedicated Senior High youth
from Minooka UMC volunteers a week of their summer
vacation to assist the less fortunate. This past
June 12-18, 25 young adults and 10 chaperones
participated in several ASP projects in Breathitt
County near Jackson, Kentucky. With this year’s
record breaking attendance of volunteers from
Minooka UMC, Marlin Hartman has promoted this
wonderful mission program in the 10 years as Minooka
UMC’s ASP leader. It’s wonderful to see the impact
he has had on all of these youths (and chaperones)
lives with his continued leadership in Senior High
Missions/Sunday School. Congratulations Marlin for
jobs well done!!
Leaders and Adult chaperones are: Marlin Hartman,
Lorain Clausen, Beth Froidcoeur, Meghan Sacarro-Culp,

The five “red” crews of 2 adult chaperones/5 youth

“Ladybug” crew built a temporary
support of the outside walls, dug holes for piers in
2 rooms for an elderly man and his brother.
“Cardinals” crew built a large
handicap ramp for a family consisting of a mother
and her two children, one of whom is an 11 yr old
wheelchair bound boy.
“Bricks” crew built a porch for a safe
exit off the back of their home for a family of
four—husband, wife and their 2 young daughters.
“Lobster” crew began digging the holes
for a row of 8 piers to support floor system for a
large family living in the small house: grandmother
and grandfather, sons and daughters and their
significant others plus their children.
Again many thanks to Claude and Karen Crawshaw for
helping with arrangements; Dawn Nemitz and the Plant
Sale crew; Gail Flatness, Maria Larabee and the
Spring Brunch Crew, Men’s Prayer Breakfast, the
Minooka UMC congregation and the Minooka Community
